Saint Tropez Regatta is tops for spectators, at least that’s my opinion. There can be few finer sights than watching the cream of the big old and ultra modern yachts head out into Saint Tropez bay.
Les Voiles de Saint Tropez as it is known locally is a magnificent event all round. Saint Tropez harbour is absolutely beautiful at this time of year and the view from up on the hill by the ramparts is just perfect.
You can get up close on the quay and watch the crews prepare and set sail amidst a vast flotilla of all sorts of craft. It’s easy to see them raising the sails and getting up a decent head of speed as they pass beyond the harbor wall.
Then what better than to kick back and relax, peruse the many ultra sophisticated boutiques for designer label goodies and then settle down for a spot of lunch on the harbour front. It is lovely to appreciate the harbour being used for sailing purposes rather than the usual rows of static super yachts.
Late afternoon the boats begin to return and it is at this moment that even if sailing isn’t really your thing you can’t help but think you wouldn’t want to be anywhere else. It’s fun to round off the afternoon in the Irish pub and listen to the banter of the crews as they unwind.
Here is a useful website in case you fancy getting close up to the action by hiring a boat yourself or taking a place on a spectator boat; boatbookings.com/yachting_content/voiles_st_tropez.php
