Mont Saint Michel from Brittany, a visit worth doing whilst staying in a holiday villa in Brittany. This is one of the most visited tourist attractions in France.
I have visited the Mont St Michel on two occasions and each time I left thinking, what a unique experience, I must do that again. Many have shared that feeling.
A visit to the Mont St Michel should be well planned to get the full benefit of the experience as it is not just the beauty of this remarkable island seemingly marooned just offshore from the mainland which is appreciable but also the incoming tidal wave with all the images which it generates.
There is more as on the island, there is a working monastery to visit as well as a number of excellent restaurants. For more information including tide times see ot-montsaintmichel.com
Try to view the island when the tidal wave comes in, even better if you can combine it with a sunset, or sunrise, as that really is one of the most beautiful, almost mystical sights you can see.
The tidal bore is amazing, a wave around a half a metre high stretching as far as the eye can see moves relentlessly towards the shore, bringing the sea with it, whilst in front of the wave flocks of seabirds pounce on the tidbits of food the bore throws up.
Located in Normandy the Mont St Michel is easily accessed from north Brittany. If you are staying in a villa in Saint Malo it’s about one hours drive. Otherwise you might coordinate a visit with your journey as there is a good chance you will pass nearby when driving to your holiday house in Brittany.
