Cannes film festival, the inside story so far, live from Cannes. We were in Cannes last night interviewing our LA based correspondent and film festival veteran to get her verdict on the films she has seen at the Cannes film festival to date this year.
Having correctly predicted last years winner our LA correspondent is tipping Kaboom for the Palm d’Or. A funny, sad, true story which combines drama, comedy and thriller all in one.
Other highlights included The Three Idiots, a very funny Indian comedy which revolves around the lives of three Indian boys, one based in the USA, one in the UK and one in India, all idiots.
The Housemaid is a Korean movie, another true story, about a girl working as a babysitter for a rich guy who gets her pregnant.
Another Year directed by Mike Leigh is a story about a girl working in a hospital, she is up, then down, gets confused and is unsure of what she wants. Very well acted.
The Princess of Montpensier is an excellent French film based in medieval times which is all about love and how love is a betrayal.
The Screaming Man, is a movie based in Chad, about a guy that knows only about working in one place. It’s about change and the inability to handle change.
Biutiful is a Spanish film about a man who has two kids who are drugged up. The mother, a lady of the night, doesn’t know how to handle them and they turn to her husband who is dying of cancer. Very intense, but well done.
Certified Copy is a very beautiful film set in Tuscany starring Juliet Binoche. It’s romantic, a bit sad and once again follows the theme of handling change.
It would appear that there are signs of economic tightening at Cannes this year as stars such as Juliet Binoche are apparently having to fork out for their own dresses and jewelry for the festival.
