Viterbo Santa Rosa festival takes place on 3rd September 2012.
Known locally as Viterbo's Festa di Santa Rosa this impressive annual event involves the parading of a monumental effigy throughout the streets of Viterbo including the San Peligrino medieval area.
Santa Rosa is the patron saint of Viterbo and the festival is a celebration for the saint. The event involves much pageantry, dressing up in medieval costumes and great banquets around the cities oldest area and other neighborhoods.
The main event is the procession which dates back over seven hundred and fifty years. Carried by one hundred porters, known as the facchini (Viterbo's popular heroes) the effigy of the saint tops a thirty metre high, illuminated tower which weighs an impressive ten thousand pounds. As many as fifty thousand people gather to watch the event. You do need to get tickets for a good view from the main stands.
