Vilanova I La Geltru Carnival, Catalonia, Spain takes place again in February 24th to 9th March. The Catalan seaside town comes alive with Carnival fervour.
There is a typically Spanish slant to the Vilanova I La Geltru Carnival such as food fights with piles of meringues. There is nothing like a good food fight in Spain, its all good fun.
There is a strong tradition of Carnival in Vilanova I La Geltru, it continued even through the Franco years when they were banned by the authorities.
The main event centres around the Plaza de Coles which is the scene for the Batalla de Caramellos. The start of Lent is celebrated by another local tradition the Sardine burial ceremony, a reflection of the local fishing industry which is centred around Sardines and Anchovies.
