It is a well-known fact that the Alps Maritime is one of the richest regions in France, but not many people are aware of that one of the consequences of this wealth is a very well financed tourism infrastructure, which is available for all.
An excellent example of the government or "Conseil General" as its known in France using this resource to good effect are the free shows running during the summer in Chateauneuf, near Cannes on the French Cote d'Azur. These include classical concerts, jazz concerts, theater and much more, accessible to all, completely free of charge.
The setting for the performances is idyllic, they will take place outdoors at the side of the ancient Notre Dame de Brusc church which is surrounded by beautiful olive trees that are more than a hundred years old. Many came early to enjoy a picnics and a glass of wine in the surrounding grounds then take their seats to see the performance as cicadas ring out their song. As the sun goes down swifts zoom overhead and gradually the stars come out on a typical warm evening.
We went to check it out and saw a thorough professional performance on 8 July 2009 by the Nice Chambre Philharmonic Orchestra that led to the public pleading for two encores which were very much appreciated.
