Monster Park, Bomarzo, Lazio, Italy is a theme park like no other. This is no Disney style joy ride park, this one was created in the sixteenth century.
Originally built as a folly the park, known locally as Parco dei Monstri, fell into abandon for many years only to be re-discovered and opened as an attraction for visitors to the Lazio area.
My own children went along with an Italian friend from Rome, they were small at the time, ten and eight, they absolutely loved the place. The combination of fantastical stone figures on a gigantic scale, magical and mythical, serpents, elephants, obelisks, nymphaums, tortoises and all sorts of creatures within the verdant setting of the "sacred wood" they found magical. They still speak of it fondly now and they are at University.
The Parco dei Monstri Sacro Bosco di Bomarzo was the brainchild of Vicino Orsini who wanted to create on his grounds "a labyrinth of symbols, where ladies and knights might look for what they most wanted and wonder till they got lost.
The Monster Park at Bomarzo is located north of Rome and is open all year round from 08.00 until sunset. Price is 9€ per adult, 4 – 8 year olds 7€. For more information call +39 0761 924029
