In the Versilia resorts of Pietrasanta, Forte dei Marmi, Camaiore and Viareggio there are designated cycle routes which allow visitors to enjoy exploring the area using peddle power. The Versilian coastal plain is nice and flat so families can enjoy cycling, safely along marked bicycle roads connecting tourist attractions so you can participate in a healthy activity while at the same time becoming familiar with the area.
One of the routes goes from Viareggio around Parco di Migliarino, on to Torre del Lago where there is a museum on the site where the composer Puccini once lived and wrote some of his most famous pieces such as La Boheme and Madame Butterly. During the main summer months of July and August, in a beautiful pier setting you can enjoy various examples of Puccini's works during the festival Puccianiano.
It is very easy to rent bikes from numerous rental shops in Versilia area, such as Cicli Kama in Camaiore, Bici Marchetti in Pietrasanta or the wonderfully named Pink Lady's Bike also in Camaiore. Of course you can bring your own if you prefer, but renting is an easy option.
For keen cyclists there are many good routes up the hills that offer breathtaking views of both the mountains, which are topped with marble, once used by Michelangelo and along sandy beaches on the coast dotted with umbrellas, sun beds and beach bars.
The Tuscan coast or Versilia is a fantastic area with wide beaches and a lively nightlife with many clubs, cafes and restaurants as well as a lovely, quiet and peaceful hinterland with hills facing the sea. It is very easy to get to either by road or flying to Pisa.
