French Greek villa to visit on the Cote d’Azur, the Villa Kerylos at Beaulieu-sur-mer is fabulous.
Entirely conceived by the ultra-rich Theodore Reinach during the Belle Epoque, on the seafront of the beautiful seaside resort of Beaulieu-sur-mer, the villa Kerylos is a fantastic reconstruction of an ancient Greek palace.
The villa Kerylos was at the centre of many “celebrity” gatherings during the twenties and a regular visitor was the next door neighbor Gustave Eiffel who was responsible for building the most iconic monument in France, the Eiffel tower.
On the 12 and 13 of June the Festival of Poseidon is celebrated at Beaulieu each year, don’t miss it if you are in the area!
I found the visit to Kerylos to be very interesting and the multi lingual audio device supplied is invaluable in order to understand the thinking and inspiration behind the Villa Kerylos project. Gain fascinating insights into the intellects of the period and the style and splendor of the French Riviera villas which evolved greatly during the grandiose Belle Epoque.
You can visit Kerylos in conjunction with the nearby Ephrussi de Rothchild villa (on the same ticket) which is what we opted to do. As the Kerylos villa is mainly all about the interior design and the Ephrussi villa more about the gardens it makes for an excellent combination and a very memorable day out. I suggest you make an early start and begin with Kerylos as it’s very convenient if you can bag a parking space on the seafront at Beaulieu, Ephrussi has parking spaces at the villa and it is usually a bit easier to find space later in the day.
The address of Villa Kerylos is Impasse Gustave Eiffel, 06310 Beaulieu-sur-mer. For more information email message@villa-kerlos.fr
