Portugal is great for eating out, whether you are a couple out for a romantic evening, a family enjoying a night off from the holiday villa barbecue grill or a gastronome drawn irresistibly to the finer foods.
So it is no surprise to discover that Portugal has a regular National Gastronomic Fesival which takes place each year towards the end of October. This year it is held in Santarem, on the west coast, a couple of hours from Lisbon, starting Friday 23rd October and running through to 8th November.
There are eighteen regions participating in the event which takes place in the outbuildings of Campino’s property. The crux of the festival is that twenty five top restaurants from around the country converge on Santarem and set up on site to produce magical regional dishes in the numerous dinning rooms.
This is a unique opportunity to experience what eating out in Portugal is all about, for an entry fee of around £25 you can enjoy a wonderful meal and degust your way around an unbelievable array of Portuguese delicacies including beautifully prepared freshly caught fish, wonderful hams, fabulous cheeses and so much more.
A huge array of stalls display and sell bounteous fresh fruit, vegetables and regional specialties including spicy sausages and delectable sweet cakes. So if you have an interest in Portuguese food this superb event which originally kicked off 20 years ago as a small gathering of restaurants then mushroomed into a National event is certainly worth a visit.
