There is a lively festival scene on all Caribbean islands and The Villas Worldwide Caribbean Villa destinations are no exception, Saint Barthelemy, Martinique, Dominican Republic and Guadeloupe all take part in the "Carnival season" which as a whole usually begins at Epiphany (January 6) otherwise known as Twelfth Night, which is an event which celebrate Mary’s visit to Jesus.
The highlight of the carnival season is Mardi Gras, taken from the French term "Fat Tuesday" and it all goes on to midnight before Ascension (first day 17 February 2010).
Usually the Martinique carnival begins in January with carnival parties taking place every weekend. On Dimanche Gras (fat Sunday) there are parades all over the island in the course of the day with participants are dressed for the day.
Mardi Gras Monday is a day of "Mock wedding" and brilliant Masquerade; the great day is celebrated wildly and everyone parades in red devil costumes as it is red Devils Day. Finally, there is the last day of Ascension with the symbolic death Carnival King or Vaval on what is also known as Day of the She-devils. This is a day with black and white only outfits.
