The Dominican Republic is a former Spanish colony (the main language spoken is Spanish) and they brought a Latin American influence to the local food which you can enjoy on holiday in The Dominican Republic today. There are also the local Taino dishes which predominantly contain potatoes, yucca and plantains as well as some African.
Dominican artwork is very expressive and can be found in the jewellery which Dominicans skilfully produce combining local materials such as coconut husk, bone, horn and amber. The islands artists make use of hemp, guano, porcelain and clay for their figurines.
Amazingly it’s actually baseball which really dominates Dominican culture and the success of their major players is a source of huge national pride.
Saint Domingo has many fascinating museums, monuments and collections of art and music. A tentative claim to fame is the belief that the body of Christopher Columbus lies in peace somewhere on the island. True or not this is the point where the west first encountered the Americas.
There is no shortage of what to do on a Dominican Republic villa holiday. If you can tear yourself away from your villa pool and garden there are around 400 kilometres of pristine white sandy beaches, lapped by the warm Caribbean Sea, so you can start there. Then there are the fiestas, quad biking, sailing trips, deep sea fishing, diving and so much more such as visiting the Los Haitises National Park.Dominican Republic Weather
