Draguignan is a lively provincial town with a pleasant pedestrian shopping area and market square along with a good range of shops for stocking up one’s holiday villa. The surrounding countryside, known locally as La Dracenie is a beautiful combination of rolling limestone hills with verdant woodland and vine growing areas dotted with pretty hilltop villages.

The most spectacular feature of the area is the dramatic Gorge du Verdon which is often referred to as the French Grand Canyon and anyone who sees it will agree that it is worthy of comparison. The river Verdon runs down the canyon and at various points it forms lakes such as the one at Castillon and the biggest and most well known Lac de Saint Croix, which is renowned for its ultra fresh water. Saint Croix is a popular, scenic spot for picnics and water based activities.

Traveling to Draguignan is fairly good with good motorway access most of the way. Nice international airport (NCE) 82km (around 51 hour and 1 minute drive).

Draguignan Weather

The climate in Draguignan is excellent for family holidays in a villa with pool from May to September when the weather is warm and sunny, the skies are blue and rain is infrequent. It can get hot in July and August.

Walkers and climbers love the Gorge du Verdon although it has to be said you need to be pretty courageous to make your way down the steep pathways which descend to the fast flowing river at the bottom of the gorge. It’s a superb sun trap in the gorge and many people spend the day hanging out by the river. The majority prefer to simply drive along the gorge and take in the amazing scenery. Much of the area is un-spoilt as it falls under the protection of the Parc Naturel Regional du Verdon.

There are many excellent restaurants in the area which is blessed with great natural resourses in the form of ancient olive groves which produce superb olive oil and vineyards which supply excellent Cote de Provence wine of which the Rose is particularly suited to the local cuisine. There is a well signposted wine circuit for those who enjoy tasting and searching out a wine to suit their personal tastes.
