The Musee de Louvre is perhaps the world’s most famous art gallery, an iconic building housing 35,000 works of art including the Mona Lisa.
Located in the heart of Paris the Louvre is a beautiful old building which has taken on a modernist twist since the addition of the controversial glass pyramid which transformed ease of access to the museum.
The building itself is a sight in itself and inside there are so many amazing paintings and sculptures it is impossible to take it all in during one visit. The Musee de Louvre is one of those must see art galleries and anyone taking a villa holiday in France should consider a day in Paris on the way out or back to visit.
The Louvre is divided into eight themed areas; prints and drawings, paintings, decorative arts, sculptures, Islamic art, Greek and Etruscan and Roman antiquities, Egyptian Antiquities and near eastern antiquities.
The Musee du Louvre admission fee is 10€ for the day with temporary exhibitions costing more. Open 09.00 to 18.00 all days (closed on Tuesday) and with extended opening to 20.00 on Wednesday and Friday. For more information consult the Musee de Louvre web site louvre.fr
