St Mark’s Basilica in Venice dominates St Mark’s square with its towering domes and spires.
Its origins lie back in 828 AD when it was built as a resting place for the remains of Mark the Evangelist which were brought to Italy from Alexandria in Egypt. The architecture is a fabulous combination of Byzantine, Gothic and Renaissance.
From the bell tower there are superb views of Venice and inside there are amazing mosaics, sculptures, paintings and the impressive Pala d’Oro which is embedded with two thousand gems.
The Basilica is free to visit and is open Monday to Saturday 09.45 to 17.00 and on Sundays 14.00 to 17.00. For more information call +39 041 2708311 or email biblioteca.proc@patriarcatovenezia.it
