Self drive holiday makers to France need to heed a new law which comes into force this summer.
As of the 1st of July 2012 drivers will be obliged to carry two self test alcohol breathalyser kits in the car and can be fined 11€ if failing to comply. Furthermore as of 1 November 2012 the driver can be obliged to carry out the breath test in the vehicle.
The aim is to bring down further the death rates on the roads in France, something which the French government has avowed to do. Two kits are required so that there is always one unused in the car.
In the UK the new information concerning driving in France has been diffused on the nations favorite motoring program Topgear and in the mainstream press. In France they call it the Ethylotest obligatoire vehicule.
You can buy disposable breathalyzer kits such as Alcosense or Alcolimit from the likes of Halfords. So if you want to stay the right side of the friendly Gendarmes you had better get your car kitted out before you set off.
