Rio Carnival, the worlds best known Carnival takes to the streets of Rio de Janeiro between 5 and 8 March 2011.
The amount of time effort and money which goes into the Rio Carnival parades and floats is huge, reflecting the passion for carnival in the city of Rio. All the samba schools in Rio de Janeiro work tirelessly throughout the year preparing for Carnival time.
One of the main storage areas was hit by fire recently and heartbreakingly many of the floats were destroyed. The admirable spirit of the organisers was to immediately set to work again to ensure that despite the setback they would be ready, the floats rebuilt and costumes re-made. Many would have given up but the spirit and draw of the Rio carnival is much stronger than that.
The Sambodrome parades start at 17.00, the ceremony is at 20.00 and the samba parades from 21.00 to 05.00, yes that’s five in the morning! Ticket prices for the Sambodrome vary widely from around US$30 to US$590. There are nearly a third of a million visitors each year to the Rio Carnival.
