Porquerolles an island in Provence for family cycling, as its traffic free, fairly flat and easy to hire bicycles.
A day out with the family on the gorgeous island of Porquerolles in France, one of the ile d’Hyeres group, is a wonderful experience and whilst you can walk round the island it’s easy to see why so many people hire a bike.
A great thing about the island is that there are so many large trees which shelter the tracks so that even in the height of summer you are not too exposed to the sun. Best of all there is a great variety of fabulous beaches and rocky coves and nearly all have facilities for locking up your bike whilst you take a dip in the azur blue sea or chill out on the silver sand.
Being an island you feel pretty safe that no one is going to walk off with your bicycle or remove inconvenient bits of it, which partly explains why there is such a culture of cycling amongst visitors to Porquerolles. There are a number of bicycle hire outfits, this is one of them velo-porquerolles.fr/ and there are plenty of cycle tracks all over the island.
The island of Porquerolles is 7km by 3km so there is plenty to explore, it has beautiful countryside with vineyards and olive groves (a large part of the island forms the Port-Cros National Park and nature conservatory) as well as a lovely town where you can shop, enjoy a drink or a meal. There is some hotel accommodation if you fancy staying the night.
Located near Hyeres you get the ferry to the ile de Porquerolles from the Tour Fondu harbour where there is substantial parking (although you should get there early to avoid queues as it gets busy in the peak months of summer and there is a charge).
