Pont du Gard in Provence is an astonishing Roman aqueduct which is just so huge you can’t help but think, wow, how did they do that?
Located just a short drive to the west of Avignon the Pont du Gard is one of the principal attractions of Provence. Spanning the river Gard and rising to an improbable height this incredible monument to Roman engineering prowess attracts many visitors each year.
When I first visited the Pont du Gard back in the 80’s it was not commercialized in quite the same way as it is today. Now you have to pay for parking (like everywhere else of note in the world), there was no visitors centre then (which is actually pretty good) and you could walk along the top of the aqueduct (which was frankly dangerous).
Today there are guided tours and comprehensive information which help you appreciate in depth what the Pont du Gard represents. For further information see pontdugard.fr/index.php?langue=GB
Other than the aqueduct there is a very nice restaurant which commands fabulous views of the Pont du Gard, the river where you can swim and canoe as well as a number of pleasant marked walks in the hills behind. So there is something for all the family at the Pont du Gard.
