Pompeii a city destroyed yet preserved after the catastrophic eruption of the Mount Vesuvius, one of the worst natural disasters of all time.
It is the sheer size and scale of Pompeii which takes most visitors by surprise as nothing really prepares you for street after street of archaeological remains suspended in time. As you walk along the stone cobbles you can’t help but visualise them full of life as they would have been moments before the pyroclastic flow swept down from the erupting volcano followed by heaps of volcanic ash.
Out of the ashes the archaeologists have preserved many things, some rather awkward and shocking of bodies others of everyday life at the time from frescoes to public baths. You should take a guide when visiting as there are many explanations worth knowing and don’t forget plenty to drink as it can be hot with little shade.
The Pompeii site is open daily 08.30 to 19.30 in the summer (slightly shorter in the winter) and prices are from around 11€ per adult and 5.5€ per child.
Pompeii is one of the world’s most amazing archaeological sights and shouldn’t be missed. You can visit from the Lazio area on a day out.
