Penguin colony at Boulders beach near Cape Town is an unusual opportunity to get up close with penguins and have a day on the beach.
Boulders beach is located in False bay, south of Fish Hoek, around 2km from Simons Town. This beautiful nature reserve is home to around three thousand Jackass penguins.
You can freely wander along the pathways alongside which the penguins nest in holes in the ground, or you can sit on the beautiful sandy beach amidst the fabulous rounded boulders and watch the penguins swim and play in the rock pools or die into the sea, you can even swim alongside them.
Boulders beach is quite a unique experience and there are few places in the world like it. Part of the Table Mountain National Park there is an entrance fee which is used to conserve the endangered species of South African penguins such as those at Boulders beach. Call the Simons Town information centre for more information +27 21 487 6800.
You do need to be a little careful as the penguins can bite when disturbed, look out for the tell tale signs of them wiggling their head, as that means they are not happy.
