La Fete de la Morue, Binic, Brittany takes place for the fourteenth consecutive year between 2nd and 5th June 2011.
The cod festival in Binic has its origins back in the early twentieth century when the fisherman were away at sea for many months fishing for cod. When they returned the whole town would celebrate.
This year Binic is expecting between 40 and 50,000 visitors who can admire the 50 old fishing boats, or greements as they are known in French, as they sail majestically around the coast.
There is a museum by the post and this being Brittany there are plenty of traditional festivities with dancing and Celtic music and of course food, wine and local Breton cider. There is a market where you can taste numerous cod based dishes and there is a special area for children.
There is plenty going on with various competitions and games on the sea, even boat building and sailing lessons. It all finishes with a bang on Saturday the 4th June at 23.00 when the fireworks begin in the port.
A visit to the Fete de la Morue makes for a good family day out for anyone staying in northern Brittany in June. It takes place around the same time each year. If you need any help obtaining the latest dates do ask and we will be pleased to supply them.
