Holiday events in Provence 2013. Our selection of the best of what is on in Provence this summer.
In February there is the annual contemporary dance festival in Avignon, The Hivernales.
At the Parc des Expositions the Avignon Motor Festival is held in March.
The French love of cartoon books both adult and for children is reflected in the Festival de la Bande Desinee in Aix en Provence from the end of March to end April at the Musee Granet, Cite du Livre and other locations around the city.
Fun and games are the theme in May at the annual Aix en Provence comedy festival known as the Festival de Rire.
There are many great wines grown in Provence from deep Cote de Rhone reds to crispy Cote de Provence rose, all can be sampled at the annual Fete de la vigne et du vin in Avignon and other towns and villages in the region in May.
Wait till you taste a Cavaillon melon, they are so sweet and juicy. Maybe do so by visiting the Cavaillon Corso annual event in May.
A country wide event the Fete de la Musique on the 21st of June is particularly enjoyable in Aix en Provence.
Scenes of rural life are ever present in Provence and the annual Transhumance pageant in Saint-Remy is a good example in May when the sheep are moved to higher pastures.
The city of Arles puts its magnificent roman arena to good use during the annual Guardian Celebration in June. It is a horse race.
Aix en Provence is a centre for art and the annual Flanneries de l'Art in June allows you to benefit from a guided tour of the cities contemporary art.
The Festival d'Avignon runs from the 5th to 26th July 2013 and is mainly devoted to theatre and comody.
In the Cloitre des Oblats in Aix en Provence each year in July there is the Cote Cour Music Festival.
Amidst a busy program of events in the city July also brings to Aix en Provence the Provence Retro Car show.
The splendid roman Theatre antique in Orange puts on the regions premiere Opera events in July and August. They are often featured on French television. From the 3rd to 6th August this year you can see Un Ballo in Maschera.
The Tremplin Jazz festival in on in Avignon each year, 30th July to 4th August 2013.
The Water Jousting Provence Championship in the old harbour of Marseille is quite a sight during July and August.
In the Provencal town of Saint Remy the Carreto Ramado is an important cultural event on the 15th August 2013.
Lavender fields are one of the emblematic sights of Provence and nowhere is better for seeing them in all their splendour than Sault which hosts the annual Lavender Festival on the 15th August 2013.
In Aix en Provence there is the annual French Chanson Festival from 27th September to 5th October 2013.
