Holiday events in Brittany 2013. Our guide to the social calendar of Breton events this year.
Seafood is a massive part of Breton culture and there are many festivities which revolve around the exceptionally high quality produce such as oysters, lobsters and scallops. In April the annual scallop festival is held in the northern coastal town of Erquy.
The Saint Brieuc Art Rock festival has established itself as a regular annual event in May. Here you can enjoy art and music of a contemporary nature.
Another Breton speciality, fish is celebrated at the small port of Binic which hosts the Fete de la Morue (cod) each year in June. A special market is held on the day and visitors are entertained by Breton folk music.
As temperatures warm up in July there is the Tombees de la nuit festival in Rennes. Music and light shows along with music performances bring the streets of the historic city to life.
There is more music in the fields near the village of Carhaix during the annual Festival des Vielles Charrues. Reggae and rock are the musical genres.
Brittany has a very strong traditional culture and you can experience it to the full at the Festival de Cornouaille which is held each year in the beautiful riverside city of Quimper. Dates this year are 23rd to 28th July.
Jazz lovers can enjoy some laid back vibes at the Vannes Jazz Festival. Location the Auditorium des Carnes in the Jardin de Limur. This year its on from 22nd to 27th July.
Young reveller can enjoy an eclectic selection of DJ's at the Astropolis Music Festival in Carene during July and August.
Our favourite named festival is on again this year at the Presque'Ile de Crozon. Don't miss the end of the world festival (bout du monde festival). This year it is on the 2nd August and Joe Cocker is in the line up.
In the north Brittany port (and ferry terminal) of Saint Malo the ramparts are the backdrop for the annual La Route du Rock festival in August.
The annual La Route du Rock festival takes place amidst the ramparts of Saint Malo castle in August 14th to 17th.
The Interceltic Festival is on in Lorient, southern Brittany in August 2nd to 11th. Held in the streets and specially erected marquees it is become a big attraction.
Another ferry port Roscoff holds the fete de l'ognion in August 24th and 25th. So if you want to know your onions then better get along there.
Chill out at the Fete des Filets Bleus in Concarneau from 14th to 18th August this year.
The Saint-Loup festival is one of the longest running festivals in Brittany. Located in Guingamp the concerts are held in the public gardens. This years dates are 10th to 21st August.
Rather intriguingly the British film festival takes place in Dinard in October.
At the end of the year the Trans Musical festival takes place in Rennes in December. Though the initial artists list has been released dates are not yet fixed.
