There was a time when Greece was known as a low cost holiday destination where you could dine out in rustic “Tavernas” and enjoy plentiful wine and the odd Raki on the house for just a few Drachma. Furthermore you could turn up on speck and be sure of low cost, albeit basic accommodation for the equivalent of a one night stay in France.
Those days are long gone and the beginning of the end was when Greece joined the common European currency, the Euro. No longer able to devalue its currency on a regular basis as it used to the effect of being in the euro has been one of rising prices. Gradually these higher costs have driven away the traditional visitors to Greece and the providers of accommodation and holiday services have had to adapt or wither on the vine.
Perhaps it’s no bad thing as nowadays the standard of accommodation available in Greece is on a par with anywhere in Europe and the development of “Greek chic decor” has led to the creation of some truly splendid and luxurious holiday villas. Thus a “new” clientele has come to frequent Greece which simply wasn’t there before and with it a wealth has arisen amongst the Greeks themselves allowing them to develop further top of the range properties where once there were but humble abodes.
So no longer a cheapie backwater in the sun Greece has blossomed into a destination where one can enjoy the famous sunsets and fabulous food in real comfort with a level of service to match. And the old charm and vibrancy of the locals is still there to be enjoyed as well as the occasional basic Taverna, it hasn’t all changed.
