For three days from the 7th August the Royal Palace festival in Singaraja on the beautiful island of Bali showcases international and local entertainers and artists in a superb cultural event centred around the Puri (Palace).
The festival is a recently established event which followed the restoration of Puri Agung Singaraja which was completed five years ago. Although Bali’s roayl family is now only a nominal entity bereft of any real power they still have many fascinating memorabilia and rituals which it was thought could be shared through the medium of the festival.
The Palace is Signaraja’s main tourist destination and is open to the public, however it is also an educational centre. The Roayal Palace is situated in the centre of the city alongside the renowned Gedong Kirtya library which houses many old references of Balinese culture.
The Palace comprises Puri Raja (the king’s pavillon), the king’s bedroom, the queens section, bathrooms and a water garden. Initially established by the King of Bulelang in the 17th century the Palace became a symbol of power during a period where Bali was divided into a number of kingdoms including Klungkung, Karangasem and Buleleng.
