Crepes taste great on a holiday in our Brittany villas which are invariably within a short drive of a local crêperie.
Crepes or pancakes as we tend to refer to them in the UK are very much a Breton speciality and bistro style restaurants specializing in crepes are to be found in abundance all over Brittany. In Brittany there are two major types, there are the sweet crepes and salted crepes and you have a whole meal of pancakes. The salted versions, known locally as crepes salees are eaten as starters and main course, they come stuffed a little bit like pizzas with everything from just cheese to seafood or eggs and bacon.
The meal is generally rounded up with sweet crepes which at the basic level are with sugar or lemon, perhaps with nutella (a big big favourite with the children) and even flambéed in liqueurs such a Grand Marnier (a big big favourite with the parents). For some reason, like many things, crepes do taste a whole lot better in Brittany. Maybe it’s because the Bretons are such experts at making them but its probably got something to do with the fresh sea air and the generally pleasant surroundings and if your lucky because your all relaxed from staying in a beautiful Brittany villa, which renders them just right. Perhaps it’s the local cider too.
Creperies tend to be very reasonably priced and they are very popular with families, probably because there is such a choice on offer.
