Celebrating a Viking heritage is what the Jorvik Viking festival is all about and this years event takes place this week 19 to 27 February.
In effect the Jorvik Viking festival is a re-enactment of the type of pitch battle which raged across northern England and in particular Yorkshire during the time of the Vikings. York is a great centre of Viking heritage and it is in York that the Norse warriers square up once again to the Saxons.
The Viking king Jorvik actually ruled York between 866 and 952AD so this is no loose Viking connection. Local children are often invited to take part in the Jorvik Viking festival, I remember mine really enjoying partaking, they came home full of it.
