Carnival in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain takes place shortly before lent in March, the streets of Barcelona come alive with Carnival festivities.
There is a tortilla making competition on Fatty Thursday 3 March known locally as Jueves Lardero. The Catalonians are also rather good at spicy meats and sausages so you can be sure of lots of warming spices.
On carnival weekend there is much activity around the market squares and streets as the locals of Barcelona compete for the golden pepper award or pimiento de oro. Things come to a head on the Saturday afternoon 5 March with the main carnival parade, the Gran Rua de carnival.
On Ash Wednesday 9 March the traditional celebration of the death of the carnival king rounds things off.
The Carnival atmosphere in Barcelona is great, the bars are full and a good time is had by all. The weather is usually a mild 15 to 18 degrees.
