Borie village, Gorde, outdoor Provence museum is a beautiful site with an unusually large number of Bories.
Bories are found throughout the region and essentially dry stone shelters which are built almost entirely of stone in an ingenious fashion. They are typical of the region in a similar way to the beautiful stone barns of the Yorkshire dales. In the bright sunshine of the south of France the white limestone of the Bories is very pretty and their aspect wonderfully ancient.
The Pierre Viala or village des Bories as it is known has been preserved as a museum, located a few minutes drive west of the stunning, fortified hilltop village of Gordes, one of the prettiest villages in Provence. There are about twenty Borie of varying sizes, it was discovered by Pierre Viala after whom the hameau des Savourins site named the museum. It was he who set about the restoration and established the museum which shows off the building and their various uses ranging from silkworm breeding to sheep shelter and store house.
It’s an interesting place to visit particularly if you combine it with lunch or an evening meal in Gordes. The entrance fee is around 5.5€ for adults and half price for children.
