Nerja caves a spectacular Costa Del Sol villa holiday attraction near the beautiful holiday resort of Nerja and lively Malaga.
The Nerja caves are right up there with the worlds most famous cave systems open to the general public and in the Andalucian region of Spain it offers an excellent visit for families out of the heat of the sun.
In the Nerja caves you can see the largest stalagmite in the world, a monster column, thirty two metres high with a base which is thirteen metres long and seven metres wide, an awesome sight.
The cave system meanders underground for around five kilometers and along the way the Cuevas de Nerja include three principal galleries, the Show Gallery, Upper Gallery and the New Gallery and within these there are various Halls.
These caves contain important cave paintings from prehistoric times but they are very fragile and access is limited to avoid deterioration.
The Nerja caves opened to the public in 1960 and have since become one of the major attractions of the Malaga area. There are a number of concerts performed in the caves and these have included some really big names such as Sir Yehudi Menuhin and Jose Carreras, unfortunately tickets are really hard to get.
Open each day the Nerja caves are only closed on New Years day and May 15th (Romaria de San Isidro). Opening times are 10.00 to 19.30 in July and August and 10.00 to 14.00 then 16.00 to 18.30 the rest of the year. The admission charge is around 8.5€ for adults and 4.5€ for children (free under 6 years old).
