Martinique, when it was originally discovered by Christopher Colombus in 1502 was known as Madinina, the isle of flowers. Located in the Caribbean Martinique is a French dependence and much of its culture derives from France.

A volcanic, mountainous island of considerable size, 70 kilometres long and 30 kilometres wide Martinique has two distinctive geological and temperate regions, the north and the south.

The lush north incurs regular rainfall on its tropical forest due to its mountainous nature, dominated by the two volcanoes Pitons du Carbet and Montagne Pelee which is still active. The western beaches here are black volcanic and the west mainly cliffs.

The south has a mainly dry climate and is dominated by hills and scant vegetation. There are many sugar plantations here along with pineapple and banana. The beaches in the south are superb.

Much of the island is turned over to National Park which coveres 700 square kilometers overall although it is divided into various sectors including the volcanic rain forests, the Caravelle peninsula as well as the petrified forests, the Salines and the Pitons du Carbet. Trecking is popular in Martinique and there are 31 marked trails.

The sea has many attractions including excellent diving and snorkeling on the coral reefs which can also be viewed from glass bottom boats. Sailing and big game fishing are also popular as well as windsurfing and kite surfing.

The Fonds Blancs mangrove swamps are fascinating to visit as are the zoological garden and butterfly farm. There is a real sense of the tropics on the island which inspired one of the great painters Gauguin to establish himself here, his works are covered in one of the various museums.

The island of Martinique has a great history, much of which revolves around the Rum industry which dates back over 300 years. Rum is still produced on the island and is considered to be of a very high quality. Holidaymakers can visit the islands distilleries and enjoy excellent cocktails!
