Villas in France have child friendly pools since the French Government introduced legislation obliging French villa owners to make the villas with swimming pools for holidaymakers in France amongst the best protected in the world.
It was in the 2002 that the French government of the day introduced a law imposing strict swimming pool security regulations which eventually came into force in 2006. I remember being on the ABTOF (Association of British Tour Operators to France) discussion council which examinied at length the implications of the new law.
There were some who argued against the law imposed by the French Commission de Sécurité des Consommateurs on the grounds that the aesthetic beauty of many pools would be lost or neighborhoods unduly disturbed. However there was no doubting the overall opinion amongst those present that the idea was an excellent one.
Nowadays the rules are well established and enforced and France has become a benchmark for private villa swimming pool security.
The rules dictate that any villa, cottage, chateau or holiday home with private swimming pool must protect the pool either with a gated fence or the pool must have an alarm detection system. Most of the villas with swimming pools in France are now protected by a displacement alarm which goes off when a mass of a certain displacement goes into the pool, others have infra red detectors. Some have fences and we have a dedicated selection of villas with Fenced pools as these are still demanded by some parents who are often not aware of the alarm systems.
Fences and alarms on swimming pools in rented properties does not mean parents can completely switch off, they must always remain vigilant with young children by a swimming pool. However it does mean that any family taking a villa holiday in France with a private pool is safe in the knowledge that there is a minimum level of protection.
