Vianna do Castello, Costa Verde, Portugal, August festivities kick off with the Feasts of Nossa Senhorn da Agonia on August 18th running through to the 21st August 2011.
This 3 day festival is a long standing annual event perpetuated by the local fisherman, who honour the Virgin in a bid to ensure their safety and prosperity at sea. The historic seaside town welcomes a mass of people as thousands come to witness and participate in the event.
Vianna do Castelo is located at the mouth of the river Lima and was originally established by King Alfonso the third. It rose to prominence in the sixteenth century as the main port from where the great Portuguese sailors set off on their explorations, consequently it has a very rich and fascinating history.
