The Parc Naturel Regional des Alpilles, a beauty spot in Provence, in fact it is one of the most recently formed parks in Provence, France, launched in 2007.
The Park Naturel regional des Alpilles was created in order to preserve the stunning countryside in the Alpilles, a range of limestone hills located north west of Salon en Provence. Included in the communes and villages in the Parc are Aurielle, Les Baux en Provence, Maussane les Alpilles, Senas, Tarascon and Saint Remy de Provence.
The coordinates for the map of the park are 43° 45′ 05″ N 4° 52′ 38″ E
I have done quite a bit of mountain biking and walking with the family in the Alpilles and found it has many treasures, from sleepy Provencal villages to archeological sites. The numerous marked tracks take you through vineyards, olive groves and oak woods, along leafy valleys and alongside magnificent limestone outcrops. I found there is a touch of the Yorkshire dales about the place except the sky is blue and the sun hot, I especially enjoyed mountain biking in the Park. There are lots of people who go there just for a picnic.
Anyone who has visited Provence in the summer will tell you that it’s hot and often all you want to do on a villa holiday in Provence is sit by the pool and relax. However if you adapt your habits a bit you can get a whole lot more out of your stay and discover some really beautiful countryside either walking or cycling. The best way to make the best of a holiday in the south of France and enjoy some days out is by starting early in the morning before the sun gets up.
