The palace of Diocletian is a Croatia attraction set, in the old town area of the historic seaside resort of Split in Croatia.
Built in the 4th Century AD by the Roman Emperor Diocletian the palace is one of the major attractions of Split on the coast of Dalmatia. Diocletian ruled what was the roman province of Dalmatia and the palace was intended for his retirement.
When the Romans left the locals used the wall for protection and built houses within. It now has many house and shops which line the shiny limestone pavements. Diocletian’s palace is amongst the best preserved Roman palace in the Mediterranean and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Monument.
To construct the palace the Romans brought marble across from the nearby island of Brac, used local limesone but went as far as Egypt for decorative granit. The water supply came from the river Jadro by means of an aqueduct the remains of which can still be seen today.
There are many historic attractions to visit whilst on holiday in Croatia and we have super range of split Riviera villas as well as luxury villas on Brac.
