The lakes of Les Landes are some of the biggest and most impressive in France and what's more they are just a short drive from the sea.
Of the three northern lakes the biggest is Sanguinet, heading south next is the lac Biscarrosse then the Lac d'Aureilhan Mimizan.
The great lake at Sanguinet is literally divided by the Gironde and Landes border. It covers a surface of 5800 hectares and is surrounded by pine woods, along the shores are beautiful sandy beaches. It is a boating centre which is ideal for sailing, windsurfing and water skiing although walking, cycling and horse riding are equally popular.
The Lac d'Aureilhan Mimizan is a nature reserve as well as a haven for water sports, it covers a surface of 3200 hectares and also has sandy beaches and paths for walking and cycling.
The Lac de Biscarrosse covers 3600 hectares and it like the others is superb for watersports, nature, walking and cycling. It is close to one of the best beaches in the area.
As you head further south towards Biarritz there are a series of smaller lakes including Leon, Soustons and Tosse.
It is the vast flatlands of Les Landes area which are so unique, with huge pine forests flanking much of the coast which is one long sand dune keeping back the mighty Atlantic ocean.
The magnificent sandy beaches by the sea are a huge attraction but in many ways it is the lakes which are the jewels of les Landes.
