The Douro valley is a Costa Verde attraction which draws many tourists who enjoy discovering the beautiful wine areas.
There is no doubt the Douro valley is certainly one of the most spectacular wine areas you will ever come across. The high steep sides of the valley are cultivated in terraces which wind like contours around the hillsides to form very pretty, verdant ribbons.
The river Duoro is big and tranquil having been tamed by a series of dams, so it now offers a picture of serenity to compliment the vineyards.
Tourist enjoy visiting the area by car, climbing up the windy roads to gain the best views. However there are other options including a charming steam train which runs in the summer months as well as river cruises.
The source of the Duoro is in Spain and it eventually flows right down to the Porto wine capital of Porto itself. Ordinary wine is also produced in the area so whilst the most commercially visible are the like of Cockburns, Taylors and Sandemans you can get hold of a regular red or white wine.
The Duoro valley offers an ever changing scene of great beauty and the superb food in the small villages goes perfectly with the local production.
We have a great range of villas in Costa Verde from where you can visit the Duoro valley. Our villa in Pinhao is actually right in the heart of the Duoro valley itself.
