Spetses, referred to locally as Spetsea, is a small Greek island located in the Gulf of Argosaronic and is also known as the Pine island due to the profusion of pine trees there. Spetses has a stunning coastline and is perfect for a relaxing holiday with an abundance of Greek charm.
The colonial style architecture combined with the fortifications punctuated with frequent ancient cannons gives Spetses something extra special, it has arguably some of the finest buildings on the Greek islands.
The main harbour and town of Spetses have numerous charming bars and restaurants as well as interesting boutique shops on small streets and pedestrian only areas. There are a distinction and serenity about the place, combined with lush vivid vegetation and stunning views. It is a lovely place to stroll around both along the coast and the back streets of the town. You can hire scooters or quad bikes and there are a number of taxis enabling you to easily take your luggage from the harbour to the villa. It is also rather exclusive and frequented by a number of prominent royals.
There is great history associated with the island and in the towns Bouboulina museum you can find out more about the impressive woman who did so much for Greek independence.
Accommodation on the island is quite limited and many opt to stay in a villa in Porto Heli then take the water taxi to Spetses in the evening. The water taxis run constantly and cost around 23€ flat rate for 2 up to about 10 people.
Travel
The way to get to Spetses is to fly into Athens (ATH) then catch a boat to the island. Or you can drive down to Porto Heli and take a ten-minute ferry crossing from there.
Weather
With the sunshine pretty well guaranteed from Easter to October half term, Spetses is perfect for a warm summer holiday. There is little rainfall but it does get rather hot in July and August although the houses are well adapted.
One of the great things about Spetses is that it is a virtually car-free island.
