South Africa boasts 27 Blue Flag beaches for 2011, announced the S.A. Minister for Tourism, Marthinus van Schalkwyk, earlier this month.
Initially there were only 3 Blue Flag beaches in South Africa when the country became the first country outside of Europe to evoke the Blue Flag ethos. The Blue Flag initiative has gained much momentum and has now globalized to include over 42 participating countries.
The Blue flag is a voluntary eco-label run by the independent non-profit organization, the Foundation for Environmental Education. The ruling criteria are applied to water quality, environmental management, environmental education, safety and a number of other laudable factors.
The number of beaches which now fly the flag of excellence is 27, which is a considerable achievement. Among the beaches which have received the Blue Flag accreditation for an impressive 10th consecutive year are Camps Bay, Cape Town, Yzerfontein Beach, Yzerfontein, MacDougall’s Bay, Port Nolloth, Lappiesbaai, Stilbaai, Southern Cape and Bikini Beach, Gordon’s Bay.The Blue Flag success is another indication of South Africa’s determination to build on the success and recognition brought by this years football world cup event, it is a country which is striving towards the highest standards.
