Scandola Nature Reserve, Corsica is located on the North West coast of Corsica, it starts at Punta Muchillina just above Ajaccio and continues to Punta Nera.
There are two parts to the Scandola Nature Reserve which was recognised as a World Heritage Site in 1983, there is the Scandola Peninsula and the Elpa Nera inlet. It is an area of dramatic cliffs made up of red Thyolite rock up to nine hundred metres in height with the occasional sandy cove.
Much of Scandola is inaccessible or very difficult to get at from the land so it tends to be visited by sea. In fact the park includes the sea, it is nearly 20km2 in total with a rough split half sea half land. The flaura and fauna are exceptional, egrets nest high in the cliffs and the crystal clear sea if full of beautiful colourful fish.
There are a controlled number of boat trips to view the Scandola Reserve, many have glass bottoms so that you can appreciate the sea life and the informed commentaries provide lots of interesting, in depth information about the exceptional geology and wildlife.
There are boat trips to Scandola reserve from as far south as Propriano, also Ajaccio, Porto and Calvi. Many will combine the trips with a stop-over lunch at a beach restaurant only accessible by sea. It’s a great day but often you need to book in advance so its best to check out local departures early on your Corsica holiday.
