At the heart of the Rhuys peninsula ( Presqu'île de Rhuys - Golfe du Morbihan), to the north is the sheltered Gulf of Morbihan, to the south the Atlantic Ocean, Sarzeau has a maritime orientation and is involved with oysters. The beauty of many islands in the Gulf is revealed in their coves, beaches and rocky points.

Sarzeau market

There is a small market most days with stalls selling fresh fish and seafood as well as organic vegetables. The main market on Thursday morning is huge with a wide variety of stalls.

Sarzeau shops

Although it is only a village there is a good range of rather up-market yet well-priced shops which include an excellent butcher, a couple of very good bakeries, a small supermarket open most days and long hours. There are two big supermarkets on the edge of the village. You really don't need to go elsewhere for your shopping though you may well enjoy a trip into Vannes where you will find exceptional fresh fish and seafood at Les Halles though you need to get there reasonably early as they sell out quickly.

Sarzeau beaches

Ten minutes drive south of Sarzeau there are beautiful stretches of beach on the open sea, notably between Plage Beg Larn and Plage Landrezac. To the west, there are a couple of charming beaches on the coast between Port du Crouesty and Port Navalo on the end of the peninsula where there is also a very nice easy coastal walk suitable for pushchairs. For a day trip, you may enjoy the wide, soft gently sloping sand of Grand Plage at Carnac where you can also visit the famous standing stones.

Sarzeau travel

Sarzeau is fairly easy to get to from either Saint Malo or Cherbourg as there is motorway (no charges) or dual carriageway as far as Vannes then just the last stretch of the smaller road which serves the peninsula.

Sarzeau weather

There is something of a micro-climate in the Gulf of Morbihan so generally speaking you can expect slightly better weather in Sarzeau than most of Brittany. It benefits from the effect of the Gulf Stream. Generally warm and pleasant, with some light winds and occasional rain it can get quite warm in July and August during main school holiday periods.
