It is official, according to the French authorities that Rum produced on the Caribbean island of Martinique is right up there with the best.
So much so that it now carries the fabled AOC or appellation controlee label which is reserved for the best wines such as Bordeaux or Champagne, or cheeses like Camembert. You may not use an AOC ticket unless your product is of top quality and Martinique Rum now proudly carries that label.
There are Rum distilleries all over the island of Martinique and visitors are invited to discover what is on offer. On the northern side of the island is there a museum operated by St James Distillery for those who really wish to immerse themselves in the history of Rum production on Martinique.
There are many types of Rums produced on Martinique and they combine with the many local liquors to produce specialties such as passion fruit punch, orange and coconut.
But of course cocktails and punch have become a fine art on the island, which is understandable when they have the very best raw materials at their disposal. Here is one that is very "in" at the moment.
Ti Punch
Use a small glass
2 ounces white rum
1 once sugar cane syrup
1 lime
