The legendary cave near Agios Nikolaos, the Dikti (Dicteon) cave or Psychro cave, has attracted curios visitors for centuries.
Greek mythology states that this was the birthplace of the god Zeus. So you can imagine the interest that generates, it is this sort of legend which makes visiting a place like Crete so entertaining.
The cave is set high on the Dikti mountain, up at just over 1000 metres and it takes around fifteen minutes to walk up the path from the car park (avoid the donkey ride, it really isn't comfortable) near the village of Psychro.
As show cave's go it is not the most amazing although there are large stalactite formations, but it the significance of the site, first discovered by a David Hogarth back in 1900 which adds import. It is a nice spot with lovely views and it does encourage you to brush up on your knowledge of Greek gods.
There are as many as 3,000 caves hidden amongst the magnificent limestone mountains of Crete which are very popular with walkers for their beautiful landscape and magnificent views.
