Lake Bracciano is an Italian gem. When the volcanoes erupted north of Rome creating vast craters many kilometres wide they laid the foundation for some of the most beautiful lakes in Italy, Lago di Bracciano is one of them.
When Tom Cruise chose to get married in the castle at Bracciano it was no surprise to the locals that such a romantic venue should be chosen by one the biggest movie stars of this generation, one who could have picked anywhere in the world.
Expense was obviously not an issue and it is even rumoured that the owner of the restaurant next to the castle was paid in the region of £40,000 not to open on the day of the wedding to ensure the privacy of the Hollywood couple and their guests.
So what is so special about lake Bracchiano? Well the first thing that strikes you about Lake Bracciano is quite how big it is, the other side is so far away you can barely see it, the perimeter stretches for thirty two kilometres.
As it serves as a major drinking water recourse for the Eternal city it is exceptionally clean. No motor boats are allowed and special sewage systems are in place for the surrounding towns to ensure the purity of the water. It is one of the cleanest lakes in Italy. That doesn't mean you can't use it, on the contrary it is ideal for swimming, sailing and canoeing with hire facilities for the latter readily available.
The surrounding area and the lake are now part of the Parco Regionale del complesso lacuale di Bracciano Martignano, no less and one of the local treasures is the La Marmotta settlement near Anguillara Sabazia which dates back an incredible 5700 years BCE.
Around the lake the countryside is beautiful, with verdant rolling hills which attract walkers and horse back riders alike to the forests and olive groves from where you can enjoy stunning views of the deep waters of the lake (165 metres at the deepest point).
The lake shore towns of Trevignano Romano, Anguillara Sabazia and Bracchiano offer outdoor cafes and restaurants specialising in local gastronomic delights, along with an ambiance of wellbeing and refinement in keeping with the splendour of the lake.
The town of Bracchiano, inhabited since Etruscan times is the pearl, its castle which is considered one of the most important in Italy was constructed for Napoleone Orsini and as well as TC has accommodated venerable guests including Pope Sixtus IV and Charles VIII of France.
Finally it is the close proximity to Rome (there is a frequent train from Bracciano) and the coast which make Lake Bracciano such an exceptional holiday destination.
