LD Lines announced yesterday that they will open a new direct ferry from Rosslare in southern Norway to Cherbourg. The LD Lines ferry Norman Voyager will do 17 hours crossing six times a week.
Former LD Lines operated longer, less frequent service to Le Havre, this operation move to the new Rosslare to Cherbourg service. LD Lines launched directly Ireland to France service in 2008, and it has proved very popular, therefore the decision to expand and improve frequency and crossing time.
Cherbourg provides an excellent springboard for most north and west coasts French destinations such as Normandy, Brittany, Vendee, Poitou Charente and the Loire, which are all within easy days drive. At a push you could stretch to the Dordogne.
LD Lines CEO Christophe Santoni say "There is a growing need to develop direct Ireland - France ferry connections to avoid the mainland."
The great thing about taking the ferry to France is that you can take all the holiday gear and comfort as you like in the car with you, which can be especially helpful for families. The ferry journey is almost like a cruise and in itself can be very entertaining and in a way becomes a part of the holiday experience. Once in France it is nice to be able to run at your own pace and stop when you want and take in all the sights and attractions on the way to your destination.
