Sterling peaked against the euro at it's highest rate for a year on Wednesday this week. So if you were wondering if it is a good time to go ahead and book your holiday villa for this summer then the answer is a resounding YES, go for it!I'm no forex trader but I do follow the progress of the pound against the euro on a regular basis and I am delighted to see that at long last the status of the pound against other currencies is beginning to reflect the rising confidence and growing performance of the UK economy. The IMF has just revised its...

The shuttle keeps rolling despite the stormsWhen selecting ones choice of travel you don't normally think in terms of what if the weather is bad, thankfully I did when planning my recent channel crossing.I elected to take my car on the Eurotunnel Le Shuttle to France last week as I had experienced a few interruptions due to snow when travelling in January in recent years. It proved to be a good choice for a number of reasons.Firstly there was a huge storm brewing which interrupted flights and whilst I don't know if the ferries were affected I...

Lake Bracciano is an Italian gem. When the volcanoes erupted north of Rome creating vast craters many kilometres wide they laid the foundation for some of the most beautiful lakes in Italy, Lago di Bracciano is one of them. When Tom Cruise chose to get married in the castle at Bracciano it was no surprise to the locals that such a romantic venue should be chosen by one the biggest movie stars of this generation, one who could have picked anywhere in the world.Expense was obviously not an issue and it is even rumoured that the owner of the restaurant next...

The grape picking in Salento in Puglia is led by women. On the Tenute Rubino estate by the sea close to Brindisi wine production has a singing, dancing feminine touch. When I was a student back in the 70's I was drawn one year, like many before and after, to the grape picking in France. Dressed in shorts, T shirt and boots we awakened before sunrise and headed out on the back of a tractor trailer into the fields, a merry band of multi generations and multiple nationalities, to spend the day in the hot sun picking ripe red grapes from the bountiful...

Fishing for monster carp in Lac de Saint Cassien. The cote d'Azur is an unlikely place to expect to be able to fish for huge carp and I was as surprised as anyone to see what lurks in the deep water of Lac de Saint Cassien near Grasse.I had been to Lac de Saint Cassien on a number of occasions. Initially just to see what the attraction was as we have a number of villas within twenty minutes drive in places like Saint Cezaire sur Siagne, Cabris and Grasse. My initial reaction was wow it's huge as it stretches out of sight. Next  time I was...

Record snowfalls in the Pyrenees this year. Coupled with well priced ski passes and accommodation make it the ski destination to consider for your next ski holiday. The French Pyrenees have long held a reputation for good value ski holidays in part due to an inferior snow record to that of the Alps. That perspective may just be changing after the bumper snow falls this winter. We were treated to images on television of some resorts in the Pyrenees where there was so much snow it was actually becoming a problem. The snow was so deep that they were...

Havr grapevine is at the origin of Bottle Shock. The wine world was shaken in 2003 when a Californian Chardonnay defeated the best of French wines in a blind tasting competition but the grapes originally came from Croatia.Bottle Shock is the name of the movie made about the momentous event which showed for the first time that French wines could be beaten in a competition which had been running for thirty years during which France reigned supreme. The man behind it all it was Mike Grgich from Croatia who left his native land to seek his fortune in the USA...
