Palio dei Normanni in Sicily in August is a three day event which commemorates the ousting of the Arabs from Sicilian territory by the invading Normans. It seems hard to believe that the Normans were busily invading Sicily around the same time as the Norman conquest of England in 1066. This time it was at the expense of the occupiers of the time from Arabia.Sicily has long been at the centre of wars due to its strategic importance as a Mediterranean island which almost acts as a bridge between mainland Europe and the north African coast. The frequent...

Juan Jazz 2012 started last night with Norah Jones headlining and Adam Cohen opening proceedings.I have long hankered after getting along to the Juan Les Pins festival since I first became aware of it thanks to some research I was doing in the area for a documentary with the BBC many moons ago.Norah Jones in concert seemed like the perfect occasion to enjoy some chilled out music by the sea set amidst the Mediterranean pines after which Juan takes its name.First up was Adam Cohen who was pretty good and was backed by a very impressive American cello...

Aix en Provence festival 2012 started on the 5th July and runs through to the 27th July. The festival d’Aix is a very popular annual event which encompasses classical music and opera at the highest level with the new opera by George Benjamin and Martin Crimp showcasing this year. Aix en Provence is in my opinion not only one of the most beautiful cities in France but it is very French in the best way and combines modern with old to perfection, it is both a class place and a fun city, full of youth and vibrancy. You will always find street musicians...

The villa a summer read for 2012 by Loseline Ley is on the shelves in bookstores and airports now. With a title like The Villa I couldn’t resist picking up the latest novel by Roseline Lea as I perused WH Smith’s in Liverpool airport a couple of weeks ago.At first I thought oh no I’m not going to like this but actually after a few chapters I really got into it and found it captivating and interesting.Without giving too much away it’s based around a villa in Sicily, Italy which is located in a magical setting, right on the sea...

Dubrovnik Festival this summer starts on 10th July and runs though to 25th August.  Balmy summer evenings in the ancient city of Dubrovnik offer the perfect venue for the summer festival performances which take place outdoors during the summer. The façade of the Saint Blaise church and its stone paved square, polished by generations of passing feet is one of the most picturesque backdrops.  There is a great program lined up for 2012 including Leo Nucci the baritone singer from Italy and Daniel Barenboim the famous pianist of Argentine origin....

Bonifacio Corsica world cliff diving series 2012 took place last week and what a spectacular event that was.Corsica is one of those places where the scenery is quite breathtaking, putting it way above many other destinations for that alone. The Corsican coast has numerous varied beauty spots but the jewel in the crown is Bonifacio, which is quite unique. The southern coast of Corsica around Bonifacio is a geological phenomenon, huge white, incredibly weathered limestone cliffs rise and overhang the crystal clear waters of the Mediterranean. They are a...

Hot Jazz in Almunecar with the twenty fifth event of the annual Jazz en la Costa.Starting on July 14 and running through to the 22 of July 2012 this years Jazz en la Costa is certain to live up to its reputation for smoldering international Jazz. It’s as much the setting as the music which makes this such an enjoyable occasion, the tropical vegetation and the blue sea combined with the San Miguel castle along with the Phoenician ruins of the ancient city of Almunecar, one of the gems of Andalusia.Jazz de la Costa is one of the most prestigious jazz...

Cote d'Azur France cooking lessons with a top chef at one of the best restaurants in the south of France. It was a request from one of our clients who is staying in a villa in Saint Cezaire in the French Riviera this summer which prompted us to look in to what is available in the way of cooking lessons in the area.We came up with a number of options but the one we liked the best is at the L’Amandiers restaurant in Mougins, which we already recommend as one of our best choice restaurants to eat out in Cote d’Azur. You can book in to take a...

Bonnard and friends exposition Cote d’Azur is on at Le Musee Bonnard in Le Cannet until 16 September 2012.This one off exhibition is unique in its content and quality and personally I really enjoyed it. To see so many original paintings by the likes of Monet, Matisse and Vuillard exposed in the charming building of the Le Musee Bonnard was a real treat. I enjoyed most of all the Bonnard and Matisse; variations on the window theme, where the artists explore the play on light and colour when looking out of a window. The other main themes are...
