Hermoupolis is the capital of the Cyclades. The main town of the island of Syros it is a cosmopolitan port with fascinating architecture.
Despite having the most important administrative centre of all the fifty six Greek islands which make up the Cyclades the island of Syros is much more authentic than many of its neighbours in the grouping. Tourism is much more low key and the locals more friendly and interested in visitors.
Outside of Hermoupolis you will find low-key seaside villages such as Kini where there are beautiful beaches devoid of garish rows of sun loungers and no hint of the throb of popular music. In the hills the locals maintain the islands traditions and you will occasionally hear the sounds of sheep stomach bag pipes.
It is in Hermoupolis, also known as Ermoupoli, that you will find a wonderful variety of lovely old buildings, such as Saint Nicholas cathedral, which reflect the rich and ancient history of these Greek islands. Hermoupolis was once a major ship building and trading centre and many of the rich shipping magnets still reside on Syros though now it has become more service industry orientated as capital of the South Aegean.
The beautiful Apollo Theatre in Ermoupoli hosts the annual classical music festival of the Aegean which is a reflection of the style and quality of the island capitals culture.
Part of the inconvenience but also the charm of the smaller Greek islands such as Syros is that you need take a boat to get there, typically via a flight to Athens.
We have a beautiful villa by the sea in Syros where many families who have booked with us have enjoyed super holidays, ask for more details.
