Salernes is well known in France for its floor and wall tiles which are produced in a very particular manner and has become a centre for ceramics in general. The Terra Rossa ceramics museum opened in 2009 on the site of an old ceramics factory. The museum is a splendid building and explains the production of the famous Salernes "tomate" tiles and displays exhibitions of ceramic art.
Nearby is St Barthelemy where there is an ancient church and a beautiful woodland walk alongside a mountain stream. The area is a mecca for walking and cycling and you can hire mountain bikes in Salernes centre to use on the many marked trails.
The surrounding countryside is beautiful and every now and again you will come across olive tree orchards and mills where you can purchase superb olive oil. This is also an excellent wine area and the nearby Chateau Thuerry is one of our favourites for stocking up on the excellent Rose.
There are many beautiful hilltop villages nearby of which Tourtour is the best known as it is classed as one of the prettiest villages in France, a classification it richly deserves. It's a beautiful spot for eating out. There is also the amazing Gorges du Verdon and the local lakes such as Saint Croix which are within easy striking distance.
